2010 FUMC Hurricane Katrina Mission Trip

We started out early Saturday morning in 3 cars named; THE BOYS car, Ed Willobee, driving all the way, with Ron Smedley, Frank Wassilak and I. THE COUPLE’S CAR; Peter and Estelle Kalakailo, Pastor Jeff and Jan Maxwell. THE GIRL’S CAR; Beki Fraser, driving all the way, with Nancy Merrell and Rebecca Picard. Now when you ride 16 hours each way and live one week together, you become a team who are on a mission. 
The Holy Spirit was working all the time and I will attest to that. We made it a point to switch off and ride in a different cars. We had fun and games and I didn’t hear one person say,” Are we there yet”. Thank you to the people of the church who made snacks and gave money for a meal when we were on the trip.
We stayed at Camp Hope, located on the property of Vancleave UMC. This church had taken on a 4 year commitment to serve the breakfast and dinner 5 days a week for all the mission teams, about 35 people, and I’ll guarantee no one went hungry. We had devotions morning and evening, where the themes were “You Can Help Heal Hearts and Homes” and “Where Did You See Jesus Today”. I saw Jesus in every one of the mission workers that where there, the host team, the church workers and the family whose home we were rebuilding. The picture on the front cover of the Gospel Truth is of all of us on the last day of our 
mission.
The Robinson Family, Tommie and Sanderia, Children, Shirley (8), Yasmine (7), Darkalas (5), Saniya (3). They and the neighbors helped when they could and served us lunch for 2 days. They lost everything in the hurricane but said; “with the help of Jesus they where making it”.
There isn’t enough room in the Gospel Truth to tell the complete story and the feelings of this mission. You will see elsewhere that we are planning another trip next year. Sign up, and feel God’s blessings as we did, there is still a great need.
