The Upper Room devotional reflection for Thursday, January 7, 2021 comes to us from Jimena Cortes of Colombia
Phillippians 4:4-7 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
1 Corinthians 2:9 (CEB) God has prepared things for those who love Him that no eye has seen, or ear has heard, or that haven’t crossed the mind of any human being.
“Beyond All Imagining”
Throughout my career as a journalist I have held important jobs with a good salary to match. However, in 2016 I was dismissed from one of the most prominent television stations in Colombia. That same year, my husband’s business ventures began to slow down. We became deeply concerned, so we made some changes. We sold our car and moved into a smaller house. Then, because we had not been able to pay down our credit card debt, we had to leave that house too. But no real estate agency was willing to lease a house to us. The outlook was bleak.
One evening, I began to pray in earnest and delve into the word of God. Today’s verse spoke to me. As I read this, I cried and asked God for a miracle. That evening while walking around the neighborhood, I saw a “For Lease” sign posted in front of a house nearby. I knocked on the door. The owner greeted me and told me she had been praying that God would send someone to whom she could lease her house. She had to move precisely at the time we had to move out of our own house.
That night as I prayed, I gave thanks to God for possibilities and opportunities that were far beyond what I could have imagined.

Prayer Focus: People facing Eviction
Prayer: God of hope, thank you for hearing our prayers. Strengthen our faith to see your higher purpose for us. Amen.
Thought for the Day: My help comes from the Lord.
I don’t have a story similar to this one, but I do know and trust that God responds to all kinds of prayers, providing hope and guidance for every aspect of our lives.
It seems to me that sometimes we are even praying subconsciously, unaware of our need to reach out to God. But God still hears us, even if we don’t know that we are praying.
Have you ever felt like God heard you in a special way, even when you weren’t aware that you had been praying?
